The 3Ps – Pain

Approximately 75% of adults in the UK suffer one or more bouts of lower back pain in their life (www.patient.co.uk)

2.5 million people have back pain every day of the year…The cost to the NHS, business and the economy is an estimated £5 billion per year. (BackCare – The Charity for Healthier Backs)

Recent research, funded by the British Medical Council and involving Bristol and Southampton Universities, General Practitioners and Alexander Technique teachers, has proved conclusively that the Alexander Technique is very effective in dealing with lower back problems. The study showed that around 24 lessons enabled long-term relief and 6 Alexander Technique lessons, plus prescribed exercise from a medical practitioner, was 70% as effective as 24 lessons in relieving lower back pain. The muscular/skeletal system works in a very delicately balanced way. Over time, we adopt postural habits that interfere with this delicate balance. As we are usually unaware of any changes that occur in the body, any niggling pain that creeps in, due to misuse, will be exacerbated over the years until we have a bigger problem to deal with. This is because we are repeating the same postural patterns over and over again.

The success of the Alexander Technique lies with breaking these harmful postural habits. F.M. Alexander realised that the relationship between the head, neck and back is crucial to whether we can stay relatively free of tension and pain, or whether we continually hold tension which can lead to long term pain.

In effect the Alexander Technique tackles the source of the problem rather than treating the symptoms.
