Living The Alexander Way of Life

“Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four ….”!

Well, actually, no, probably not!
When I first heard this Beatles song in 1967, I first thought “what a cute little song” and secondly,
that it didn’t apply to me, not least because sixty-four seemed so old!! Whizz through the years,
past nursery, state education, working at the BBC, marriage, child rearing, teaching and, hey
presto, I am at sixty-four! Well, not quite, but later this year.
This has given me something to think about, not least because I have seen a few elderly relatives
settled into nursing homes. Now, in the main, they are great and the staff very attentive towards
their guests and sometimes they are a necessary route to go. However, over the years I have
learned to value my independence and, on a very basic level, I want to decide when to eat and
have a cup of tea and when I can go out. None of us knows what’s around the corner, but I want
to stay in my own home for as long as I possibly can and am able to do so.
I believe that the Alexander Technique, with its emphasis on learning body alignment, balance and
co-ordination, will keep me on the right road. It really is one of the three best things I ever did,
along with finding my husband and the having our daughter! Alexander Technique teachers
undertake three years training and will be willing to discuss with you how the Technique can work
for you. Give it a go you won’t regret it.
