Like a Rubber Ball

Okay so who remembers this little gem of a song from Bobby Vee in 1961 I do, but, of
course, I was VERY young when I first heard it, back in the days when there were vinyl
records. Remember them?

Anyway, my reason for mentioning it is I was reintroduced to a large rubber exercise ball
recently. Exercise junkies use it to enhance their exercise activities. However, when I was
doing my Alexander Technique training, about twenty years’ ago, we used to sit on them as a
way of releasing the lower back to ease stiffness, tension, and lower back pain and to help
maintain a good sitting posture. I also used it when I was pregnant with my daughter, and
with my pregnant pupils, because it was soft to sit on. You balance on the ball, sitting on
your sitting bones, with both feet flat on the floor. You feel your head nicely balanced on top
of your spine.

They are inexpensive, easy to get on line and some come with a pump and exercise DVD,
depending upon how much you wish to spend. A pump was essential for me if I wasn’t to
turn a purple shade of blue, however, you may have the lung capacity not to worry about
that. They come in different sizes, usually 55, 65, 75 cm and in different colours, so you can
match it to your decor! I recommend it, the ball that is.

Let me know how you get on, or if you need any help with how to use it. In the meantime,
just need to get that damn song out of my head …..
